About

Alexandra Ashby has been drawing since she could hold a pencil. She has been taking art classes since her youth and the subject matter of her drawings has increasingly reflected her love of pets, and all things canine in particular.

Her business started in 2008 when she decided to draw a portrait of a peppy Boston Terrier puppy that accompanied a contractor working on her house. Seeing the look on his face when she presented the image and hearing the complimentary remarks from friends and family seeing her other portrait work confirmed that she'd found an outlet for her talent and her passion. Capturing the expression and character of people's pets was rewarding for her, and  treasured by the owners. Each drawing is a reminder  of the affection and devotion between beloved pets and their owners.

The use of pastels as a medium allows vibrant colours and anywhere from minimal to picture-like detail. Each portrait is hand drawn from specially chosen photos in oil and/or chalk pastel on acid free pastel paper. The final work is then sprayed with a pastel fixative to seal the pastel and prevent any unwanted transfer or blending.  Each commission is complete when the customer is satisfied!

Alex's art has been displayed at the Sidney Fine Art show, Abakazi Gardens, and Cedar Hill Recreation Center.

Alex lives with her golden retriever x cocker spaniel Bodhi, her partner Tyler, and their Abyssinian cat named Indy.
